Title: “Exploration implications of multiple formation environments of advanced argillic minerals: Maintain mineralogy, textures, and morphology”
Abstract: Most general alteration terms do not communicate the complete mineralogical assemblage, textures and morphology that are essential to interpret alteration genesis. One example is advanced argillic, a term defined by J.J. Hemley in the 1960s to include alunite and anhydrite, aluminosilicates (kaolinite, halloysite, dickite, pyrophyllite, andalusite, zunyite, topaz), and diaspore, all with clear shortwave infrared (SWIR) signatures, plus pyrite. Various assemblages of these minerals can form in five distinctly different geologic environments of (advanced) hydrolytic alteration, at a pH of 4–5 to <1, most at depths <500 m but locally deeper than 1 km, each with different spatial relationship to potential mineralization.
Biography: Dr. Hedenquist is an independent advisor to the mineral industry on exploration for and assessment of hydrothermal ore deposits, with work in 45 countries for over 145 companies and agencies on over 440 assignments, including training. From 1979 to 1998 he spent 10 years each with government institutes of New Zealand and Japan, studying active geothermal and magmatic hydrothermal systems, as well as the formation of epithermal gold and porphyry copper deposits. He is also adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa.
