The GSN Elko Chapter invites you to their April meeting!
Thursday, April 16, 2026
Western Folklife Center, 501 Railroad St., Elko, NV
Food and Drinks @ 6 p.m., Talk @ 7 p.m.
Speaker: Will Barba, Kinross
Title: “Late Jurassic reduced intrusion-related gold deposits of the Bald Mountain mining district, Nevada, USA”
FOOD & BEER SPONSOR: WALSH RECLAMATION
Abstract: The Bald Mountain Mining District hosts one of the few known reduced intrusion related gold systems in Nevada. The Bald Mountain stock and an associated dike swarm of variable composition were emplaced into Cambrian-Ordovician strata within a crustal scale NW-striking structural corridor known as the Bida Trend during the late Jurassic. Surrounding the stock is a hornfels and skarn metamorphic aureole, a pronounced Au-Bi-Te-As-Sb geochemical zonation pattern, and a concentric ring of gold deposits that account for approximately 5 million ounces and counting. This talk will discuss the various intrusive suites, geochemistry, alteration types, and sulfide assemblages of the intrusion related gold deposits at Bald Mountain, with examples from some of the deposits with the largest Au endowment, including Top, Redbird, and Rat. The robust dataset and knowledge collected from exploring and mining these deposits over several decades have provided the framework for renewed intrusion related gold exploration that is being conducted throughout the district today.
Bio: Will grew up in Arizona where he attended Northern Arizona University. He then completed his MS at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2020 and has spent much of his professional career with Kinross working at both Round Mountain and Bald Mountain mines since 2021. Will has a strong background in structural geology and field mapping, and has experience working on LSE, Carlin-type, and intrusion related gold systems in California, Nevada, and Idaho.
